Were you really passionate about getting into design profession or was it those social media trends about designers’ lifestyle that attracted you?

The day you start your journey with title of Designer, you will start noticing the change in you. Your thought process, looking at elements around and applying design perspectives to them. What may sound mumbo jumbo to others, will become your routine observation.

And that’s how you improve your Observation skills.

The journey may begin as a Graphic Designer (an intern or a full-time ) which would sound exciting to begin with. However, you end up being UI / UX designer, Web designer, Video editor & Motion Graphic Artist, 3D Artist and more, as you do all these tasks by yourself, like a one man army for all solutions.

You think it’s easy to survive that?

Not really.

It’s tough and intimidating, but this is the truth. Don’t be bothered by it, rather take it as an opportunity to upskill.

Project deadlines, sleepless nights, countless mugs of coffee, multiple feedback from clients, last minute concept change, loading weekends over it. Well, I said it’s not going to be easy, but worth it. You would learn, unlearn, skill up, innovate, master a tool, and be really good at what you do. But at some point of time you’d hear things like ‘design is easy’ or ‘I can do it in minutes’, or even ‘I can make the same on powerpoint’.

You would go through that too, and would find that that both funny and frustrating.

All the designers go through this phase in their career journey and it will take some time to come out of it. You should always look for a good mentor, who can show you the right path. It’s a long shot. Keep hurdling, learning and adapting with tools and techniques.

  • Learn one new thing every day
  • Keep yourself updated with new design tools and techniques
  • Read some interesting design case studies
  • Research on upcoming design trends
  • Join design groups / communities and interact with fellow designers
  • Utilise extra time to build your portfolio

Good luck!
